I think that the contacts in the starter solenoid are bad or the starter is bad (the isolation is melted in the starter). A fix is a new starter.
I have had this exact problem in a: VW micro Van,
Three Nissan Stanzas and a Nissan Maxima. I also see that J.C. Whitney sells starter heat shields for earlier Chevrolets. The: "starter will not crank on a hot engine" problem has been a thorn in my side for many years. The problem always went away after replacing the starter, but who wants to replace starters every two years?? This should not be a problem with the Savage. I think that your starter has been also abused and has insulation break down, by over cranking at some time!
